Sending Text Messages

Text messages are a quick way to contact patients about appointments, confirmations, and more. Open Dental offers several options for sending text messages that improve office workflow including:

  • Send individual text messages (see below).
  • Send batch text messages from the Confirmation List.
  • Send automated text messages to remind patients about an upcoming appointment. See eReminders.
  • Send automated text messages to remind patients about an upcoming appointment AND allow the patient to e-confirm. See eConfirmations.
  • Send recall reminders via text using Web Sched Recall.

Requirements:

Character Limitations: A message segment is 160 characters. Each additional message segment will result in additional charges.

  • Carriage returns add two characters.
  • The following characters are allowed: a-z, A-Z, 0-9, . , : ; ! ? ( ) ~ = + - _ \ / @ $ # & %.
  • If a non-allowed character is used, the message will fail.

Notes

  • If you reach your monthly Integrated Texting limit, you will be asked to increase your limit before sending more texts.
  • To view text messages that you have received, and reply, see Text Messaging Inbox.
  • Text messaging is not a secure method of sending PHI. See Encryption of Data in Transit.
  • If using CallFire's legacy product for outbound texts, see CallFire instead.

Sending a Text Message to a Patient

  1. Select a Patient.
  2. Click Text in the Toolbar or on the Edit Appointment window.
    If the patient has Text OK set to No, you will be asked to mark the patient okay to receive text messages. Click Yes to change the setting to Yes and proceed.



  1. Verify the patient. To select a different patient, click Find. Phone number automatically populates with the patient's wireless phone number.
  2. Enter the text message. Right click to insert the today's date or a quick paste note (see Text Boxes with Right Click Options). If sending from the Edit Appointment window, the default Text confirmation message set in Confirmation List Setup.
  3. Click Send.

A commlog entry is automatically generated for text messages sent to a patient. Set the default commlog type for text messages in Definitions, Commlog Types.

Sending a Text Message to a Non-Patient

  1. Click Text in the Toolbar.
  2. Select 'Another Person'.
  3. Enter the wireless phone number to send the text message to.
  4. Enter the text message. Right click to insert the today's date or a quick paste note (see Text Boxes with Right Click Options).
  5. Click Send.
