Enterprise Features

Open Dental has a variety of features and setup possibilities to accommodate Enterprise and multiple locations.

Scalable to Match Your Growth

Whether you're about to open your second location or your 30th, Open Dental has the ability to grow with your practice. Enjoy the flexibility of choosing the best solution for your practice.

Tailored to Your Network

Open Dental offers several ways to set up your system, accommodating any number of locations. The Clinics feature lets you operate multiple locations from a single database while keeping their data separate for reports. This is perfect if your patients visit different practices or if you need to access data across locations.

Use options like Replication or the Central Enterprise Management Tool (CEMT) to manage separate databases for each location efficiently. Even customize how you want your server to be hosted.

See Multiple Locations for more information.

Customizable to Meet Your Workflow

If your office operates across multiple locations or requires specific features, enabling the Enterprise feature can be beneficial. This feature provides additional preferences and groups them in an easy-to-access Enterprise category. Additional preferences are available to enhance performance and address latency issues that may arise with large databases or slow connections.

If you're using a shared database, Clinic features allow you to restrict user access to specific clinics, run reports by clinic, and customize settings as needed.

Setup Options

Depending on how you want to set up and access different locations, there are a variety of options when it comes to your database setup, including:

Click a link above to jump to that section on the page or see Multiple Locations for detailed information on various setup options.

Clinics

The Clinics feature allows multiple locations to be run from one database while keeping locations separate for reporting. This is a useful option when patients routinely see providers at another practice or access is needed to data across locations. Clinics can be used in conjunction with various hosting and database setup (e.g., cloud or server)

While Clinics do allow access to data across locations, security restrictions are available to prevent users from accessing information from certain clinics as needed. Reports can also be restricted to specific clinics for users as needed. For more information see Clinics for more information.

Open Dental Cloud

Open Dental Cloud is an available service where Open Dental hosts your database(s) on our servers. This can be used for a single location or multiple. This can also be used in conjunction with the Clinics feature. Open Dental Cloud is available for US Customers only. See Open Dental Cloud for more information.

Replication

The MySQL database framework used by Open Dental supports a technology called Replication. This keeps a replica database constantly synched with a primary database, allowing you to have multiple databases that sync changes so information is available across all databases. There are multiple options for Replication and details are available here: Replication.

Central Enterprise Management Tool

The Central Enterprise Management Tool (CEMT) allows Multiple Locations to use separate databases at each location, yet have a centrally located management tool to interact with all the databases. This allows users to access each database as needed and run reports. For more information see: Central Enterprise Management Tool ( CEMT ).

Middle Tier

Middle Tier is an option for Multiple Locations that isolates the database, improving speed and security by preventing client workstations from directly accessing the database. Middle Tier can be used in conjunction with other Multiple Location setup structures, like Clinics. For more information see: Middle Tier.

Self-Hosted Cloud

Cloud services, like Amazon RDS, that support a compatible version of MySQL or MariaDB can be used to set up a virtual server to host your Open Dental databases. This is different than Open Dental Cloud and can be set up and managed by your IT. For more information see: Amazon RDS.
