eConnector Setup

The eConnector is an Open Dental service used by all eServices to facilitate communication between Open Dental's secure servers and your office.

Installation requirements:

  1. An active Open Dental registration key. If you have multiple locations, each location needs a unique registration key so that the correct information is routed to the correct location.
  2. Update to the most recent stable version. We recommend updating regularly to the latest minor build. See Updating Open Dental to check for updates.
  3. Install the eConnector on a single computer running Windows Vista or newer. Typically it is installed on the database server, but can be installed on a workstation (e.g. if the server doesn't meet operating system requirements).

Only install on a single computer.
The computer hosting the eConnector must always be on and awake for eServices to operate normally. If turned off, hibernating, or in sleep mode, the service will not run and your eServices will be down until the computer wakes up. If installed on a workstation, both the workstation and server need to always be on.

Updating Open Dental Versions:

  • Always start an update from the computer that hosts the eConnector.
  • Run Open Dental as administrator so the eConnector service automatically stops before the update and restarts after.

Troubleshooting: See eServices General Troubleshooting. If you need further assistance, or to schedule an installation appointment, contact support.

Webinar: eConnector Installation

Identify if the eConnector is Already Installed

  1. Click eServices, eConnector Setup.
  2. Verify the Current eConnector Service Status.
    • "None" means there is no existing eConnector service.
    • "Working", "Error", or "Critical" status means an eConnector was previously installed.
  3. If the eConnector is installed, the computer it is installed on should list in Setup, Miscellaneous, Update Server Name. See Miscellaneous Setup.
  4. If the Update Server Name field is blank, it was either never set or a user has erased it. Locate the eConnector host PC (check on the database server first) then enter the computer name in the Update Server Name field.

Install the eConnector from the eServices Dropdown Menu
Before performing these steps, read the information above.

  1. Log into Windows as a user with Administrative privileges.
  2. Update to the most recent stable version. If the Listener Service is already installed, the eConnector will attempt to install automatically during the update and if it is successful, you may skip the remaining steps.
  3. Right click the Open Dental icon, then click 'Run as Admin'.
  4. Log into Open Dental as a user who has the Security permission 'eServices Setup'.
  5. In the main menu, click eServices, eConnector Service.

  1. Click Install.
    • If you receive an error stating the installer doesn't have access to the registry, you need to log into Windows as a user with higher privileges (e.g. administrator) or manually install the eConnector (see below).
    • If you receive an error "Failed upgrading to the eConnector service: Unable to install the service", run the setup.exe file on the host computer and try installing again.
    • If you are prompted to set your computer as the Update Server, click Yes. If you are not prompted, check that the current computer's name is entered as the Update Server Name in Miscellaneous Setup.
    • If you are prompted to allow the eConnector to begin listening for requests, click Yes.
  2. When installation is complete, click OK.
  3. Verify that the eConnector Listening Type is 'ListenerServiceProxy'. If not, check the 'Allow eConnector to communicate for eServices' box then click Save.
  4. We recommend allowing eConnector through your firewall by creating an exception for the OpenDentalEConnector application. This is a technical process and you will need to know what firewall you have (e.g. Windows Firewall, AVG Firewall, or another software). See Allowing eConnector through Windows Firewall.
  5. If installing on a workstation, you will need to configure the eConnector service to run using administrator credentials. This requires technical knowledge and you may wish to contact your IT specialist.
    1. Click Windows Start and open Services.
    2. Right click eConnector, and open Properties.
    3. Click Log On.
    4. Select "This Account".
    5. Enter your administrator login credentials.
    6. Click OK.

Manually Install the eConnector
Sometimes the eConnector must be installed manually due to permission restrictions on the server or workstation.

  1. Open the Service Manager. In the main menu, click Tools, Misc Tools, Service Manager.
Or, Locate the Open Dental application folder. Depending on how Open Dental was installed, this may be C:\Program Files (x86)\Open Dental or C:\Open Dental. Double-click ServiceManager.exe to open.

Note: You do not need to uninstall the current Listener Service (OpenDentCustListener).

  1. Click Add.

  1. Enter or choose the Service Name. It must begin with OpenDent (e.g. OpenDentalEConnector).
  2. Click Browse and select the OpenDentalEConnector.exe.
Typically it is located in \Program Files (x86)\Open Dental\OpenDentalEConnector\
  3. Click Install.
    1. Enter your configuration settings. Set the Server to the name of your database host computer and verify the correct spelling of the database name.

    1. Click OK to close the configuration settings window.
    2. If this installation is successful, the status will change from 'Not installed' to 'Installed, Stopped'.
  1. Click Start to start the eConnector service. The status will change to 'Installed, Running'.
  2. Enter the eConnector host computer's name as the Update Server Name in Miscellaneous Setup.
  3. We recommend allowing eConnector through your firewall by creating an exception for the OpenDentalEConnector application. This is a technical process and you will need to know what firewall you have (e.g. Windows Firewall, AVG Firewall, or another software). See Allowing eConnector through Windows Firewall.
